About Project Be:

Project Be is a fun, creative, interactive empowerment and etiquette development program to help girls prepare to be everything they can be.  This personalized program encourages each participant to choose who she wants to be and pursue that dream.  Each female who participates fully in the program will learn how to sharpen their personal image, improve self-esteem and self-confidence and communicate the right messages. Each young lady will also learn important skills in personal grooming, etiquette and civility and how to project a positive image.

Young girls of African descent have troubles developing their self-esteem. In addition to a number of psycho-social risk factors such as lack of role models, lack of education, substance abuse, pregnancy, as well as risky sexual behaviors compounded with issues of cultural displacement and lack of a stable support system, some girls not only struggle with defining themselves, but also lack basic skills that can further alienate their efforts to interact and succeed in today’s society.

Consequently, Black Pearls Community Services, Inc. (Black Pearls) conceived and developed Project Be to assist girls in building the tools to help them navigate the difficult and often confusing transition from teenage to young adulthood.  The program's primary goal is to help young ladies build skills, develop a positive self-concept and be empowered to make positive life choices. By reaffirming their identity and uniqueness, all girls will be given the tools to help them begin to develop the strength, courage and life skills to deal with future challenges.

Black Pearls is a community service group committed to the advancement, development and education of the Black, West Indian and African community and the community at large in the Greater Toronto Area. Black Pearls produces community service programs focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on socioeconomic and academic concerns for Black women.  Our signature programs include the Black T.I.E. Charity Gala, BP Scholarships, BP Book Club, Economics Bi-monthly Seminars, and Project Be.  Black Pearls is a not-for-profit organization, currently applying for charitable status.

Workshop Topics:

I Like Me — Self-Esteem, Self Empowerment

This workshop will help girls to accept themselves as they are and set them on the path to self-love. Through various exercises and interactive activities, they will learn how to boost their self-esteem and feel empowered because they’ve learned how to take responsibility for their own lives.

Building Healthy Relationships — Girls and Social Aggression

This workshop will allow our girls to identify, cope with and get past the rising epidemic of socially aggressive behaviour such as rumours about us, verbal insults or threats at the hands of girls.  Through interactive activities, the girls will learn how to accept their peers for who they are and trust others and love themselves.

Building a Strong Foundation — Health and Wellness

The Health and Wellness workshop will address the embarrassing questions we are afraid to ask, taboo topics that we’re taught not to discuss and provide an open dialogue with the some of the GTA’s leading practicing medical and psychological doctors.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall — “Real” Beauty

At a young age, black females are falsely exposed to society’s standard of beauty; beauty that is at times determined by the pigment of ones skin, the texture of her hair and the shape of her body.  The “Real” Beauty workshop will assist in teaching black girls to embrace their own beauty and to recognize the difference between society’s perceived beauty standards and REALITY.

Comportment, Deportment, Poise  Grace — Social and Business Etiquette

The ability to distinguish oneself is the key to success in any social or professional setting. This session will utilize experiential learning to prepare our young ladies for any situation. What fork to use, what’s appropriate to wear, do I need business cards at 15? All the questions plus more will be answered. This session will help to polish a young ladies professional and personal image and conduct.

Say it Loud — Leadership and Communication

The foundation of great leadership is strong interpersonal communications. This session will focus on developing skills to help young women motivate, influence and affect change. Communication is a form of expression.  It is important that teenagers master the various arts of communication and, through this workshop, we will foster their inter-personal skills.

Putting it All Together with Style — Semi-Formal Luncheon

The girls get to show off what they have learned. At this event the young ladies apply everything they have learned in the previous six weeks and graduate from the Project Be program.
